A RESTAURANT AS A SPACE OF NATIONAL MEMORY: MERGING TRADITIONS AND CONTEMPORARY DESIGN by Yelyzaveta Shulha
The creation of establishments in a traditional ethnic style that tell people about their history is not only relevant but also essential in our time. The revival of national culture and its popularization through design, gastronomy, and architectural solutions play a significant role in shaping public consciousness. Ukrainian style is not just about embroidered shirts or Petrykivka painting – it is an entire layer of historical heritage that can be reinterpreted and integrated into modern formats. Our project for a restaurant in a contemporary Ukrainian ethno-style aims to combine elements of traditional Ukrainian architecture, folk art, and natural materials to create a unique atmosphere of hospitality.
This restaurant is not just a place for dining but a space where visitors can feel connected to their roots, immerse themselves in the world of Ukrainian crafts and traditions. The interior of the establishment is designed in a natural, warm color palette that harmoniously reflects the colors of Ukrainian nature and traditional homes. Beige, brown, black, and white tones dominate the space, creating a cozy ambiance. The use of natural materials such as clay, wood, and linen emphasizes the project’s ecological and authentic concept. The walls of the restaurant are finished with clay plaster, reminiscent of traditional Ukrainian mud huts, and adorned with ornamental patterns inspired by Ukrainian embroidery motifs.
Every detail of the interior carries symbolism and meaning. The key decorative feature of the restaurant is a large shelf displaying ceramic pieces crafted by Ukrainian artisans, serving both an aesthetic and cultural-educational function. Each jug, plate, or pot on the shelf represents a part of Ukraine’s rich artisanal heritage that deserves attention and preservation. The walls of the restaurant are decorated with hand-painted plates representing different regions of Ukraine, showcasing the diversity and richness of its folk art. The space also features symbolic elements in the form of clay sheep, which embody the agrarian culture closely linked to Ukrainian history, farming, and livestock traditions.
A special highlight of this project is the restaurant’s culinary concept. Here, the kitchen is not just a place for food preparation—it is a gateway to the cultural world of Ukraine. Each month, the restaurant focuses on a specific region, introducing guests to its unique dishes and culinary traditions. This allows visitors to continuously discover new gastronomic experiences and explore the multifaceted nature of Ukrainian cuisine. Every dish is served in regionally inspired tableware, further enhancing the cultural immersion.
The functional zoning of the space is carefully designed to ensure maximum comfort for every visitor. The main hall offers diverse seating options, including communal tables for large groups, intimate two-person tables, and cozy booths. The bar area is styled as a modern interpretation of a traditional Ukrainian tavern, while the panoramic terrace connects guests with nature, reinforcing the establishment’s connection to its surroundings. Decorative accents such as wooden barrels, wine bottles, antique chests, and other ethnic elements add authenticity to the space, making it a place where everyone can find something both familiar and new.
This project is not just about food or design—it is about creating a space where national culture comes to life through materials, forms, symbolism, and atmosphere. It is dedicated to promoting Ukrainian traditions in the modern world, supporting artisans and local producers, and establishing a new format for gastronomic tourism. At a time when Ukraine is facing profound challenges, such spaces serve not only as economic contributors but also as cultural hubs that strengthen national identity and encourage its global recognition.
Thus, this contemporary ethno-style restaurant is not just a place for dining—it is a platform for dialogue with tradition, the preservation of cultural heritage, and its reimagining in a modern format. It is a space where the past meets the present, creating a unique environment for experiencing and celebrating Ukrainian culture as a living, evolving, and inspiring force.
